For all flooring types, we are talking about an ideal application temperature of 20-25ºC, on decent substrates. Deviations from these admissions might vary the consumptions/times/sequence of layers/preparation work and the final result in general.

On dry asphalt (or dry waterproof non-polished concrete, preferably after light grinding to provide grip and bite) surfaces

The system is described in detail in the TDS of the materials involved.

First make sure the substrate is as good as possible (stable, clean, flat), applying, if needed, two ELASTOSPORT layers on the substrate before placing the ISOPOL rolls (see SPORTFLEX-EX system). This would be needed on asphalt substrates and not on concrete screeds.

Then place the ISOPOL rolls on the floor in their final positions without gluing them. Lift each side of each roll and apply the PU glue by either notched (toothed) trowel with 3mm teeth (better and recommended) or by flat (straightedge) trowel and then glue the rolls immediately without waiting. You will have to make sure there are no bulges, cavities, hollow spots on the ISOPOL surface by flattening/stretching out the rolls while gluing. In case there are small bulges (humps, swollen parts) on the ISOPOL after its application, youll have to tear it around the edge of the hump without removing it completely (with a knife or something), raise that small part, put some PU glue underneath and glue the hump part again, making sure this time its flat. Then you let everything dry.

Do not overlap the rolls but bring them as close together as possible to eliminate gaps. If you use the notched trowel (which we strongly recommend), do not put any weights on the edges or anywhere else, its not needed. You could always use a light cylinder (10-15kg maximum) to compact the rolls on the floor right after gluing, especially if you use the flat trowel for the glue.

After the ISOPOL rolls are glued on the surface and at their joints one next to the other in a tight way (without overlapping), it is recommended that the joints (only) are covered flush with ELASTOTURF (or PU FLEX 140) with a flat trowel (or a brush) along their whole length, so that the surface is leveled out. Next day the joints are ground lightly with sandpaper or other grinding device to smooth out the joints with the rest of the surface and create the required roughness, and then ELASTOTURF layers are laid as usual over the whole surface.

*** In case there is rain while gluing, the hardening of the glue will be compromised and the gluing process will have to be repeated. In case there is rain after the ISOPOL rolls have been glued, youll have to allow for the water absorbed into the rolls to dry out before covering with ELASTOTURF



Application temperature:
10 to 30º C (for outdoor areas, in the hottest summer days, early morning hours-or late evening hours-are preferred for application. Noon or early afternoon hours-or in general hours when temperature is rising- should be avoided for application)

Working temperature of applied material:
-30 to 50º C

Tools of application:
Single-rubber-edge squeegee (75 cm length recommended)

Consumption (20-25º C):
2.5 kg/m for 1-1.5 mm thickness in 3 layers at least
Covering of the first (or second) layer: in 3-5 hours

Alternatively, ELASTOTURF 851S can be applied by spotty roller in one layer (with 2.1 mm spots or so)-followed immediately by spiked roller over the surface to kill the air pockets and level out the surface-but it will be harder to apply

Besides, note that the first layer of ELASTOTURF 851S might consume more material than the following layer because of filling in the micro-irregularities (pores) and the texture of ISOPOL.

In the case the surface is concrete, it might need grinding (by mosaic machine)

  • The squeegee should be dragged along to follow smoothly the contour of the surface, not too hard (to avoid hick-ups of the squeegee or blocking of its movement), not too soft (to avoid leaving excessive material in places)
  • ELASTOTURF 851S should be applied in a meandering way, beginning from one edge of the area, going down to the other edge in one strip (squeegee's width), then turning back on the opposite direction overlapping the previous strip by 20-30 cm or so and continuing the same way. Possible traces of the squeegee edges will have to be smoothed out with the squeegee or other tool (e.g. flat metal trowel). In any case, those traces tend to be eliminated after the area is put in use
  • For better aesthetic result and consumption control, after the first and second layers of ELASTOTURF 851S have been applied, it is important to cut off any excess material protruding from the surface, bulges or humps by sanding or by straightedge (flat) small metal trowel (with handle or not).
  • In any case, the presence of liquid water on the surface will compromise the drying process and the integrity of any applied layer that has not dried out, because of possible emulsification or local damage of the acrylic material.  After application of the final layer of the system, (ELASTOTURF 851S or, if applied on top, POLYSPORT MAT 952) has to stay at least 3-4 days to dry completely before being given to use.   If there is liquid water on the surface during this drying-out period, it should be ensured that at least no standing water stays on the surface, to avoid excessive emulsification or damage of the acrylic topping.
  • You have to make sure there is no rising moisture in the substrate of the flooring system, which will compromise the drying process of the materials involved (e.g. by emulsifying acrylic materials like top-coat ELASTOTURF 851S) or the performance of the dried materials by exerting from underneath vapor or water pressure on them (creating for instance the danger of local swelling of the applied ELASTOTURF 851S).
  • In case there is water on the surface while a layer is not sufficiently dry, it will be probably have to be laid again or complemented somehow in order to restore the washed-away or compromised material. In case there is water after a layer had dried sufficiently and before the next one, the surface will have to be left  to drain the water and get completely dry again before proceeding. A layer of ELASTOTURF is considered dry when its surface is not sticky any more (finger test). 

Usually it takes around 4 days for a 400-500 m sports floor to be done, with 3 or (better) 4 people, average 14-16 working days in all-or maybe less (those times do not include the additional layers of ELASTOSPORT that might be needed, that could be done in a single day by the same three people)

Again, dead times of course can be utilized for other works, besides the projects are usually considerably bigger than 400m, so the dead time is minimized if different phases of the application take place in different parts of the project. Moreover, for bigger surfaces more square meters are possible per day in average because you will be able to work on bigger open surface with the same materials (PU 140, ISOPOL or ELASTOTURF) -and thus minimize dead times. 

Consider half a day more for the optional polyurethane top mat sealer POLYSPORT MAT 952, for two people.  POLYSPORT MAT 952 is applied next day after the last ELASTOTURF 851S layer (or CONCENTRATED ELASTOTURF 852 layer).  It's always advisable to sand the final layer of acrylic ELASTOTURF 851S (with sandpaper or something like that) after drying and before laying the mat varnish POLYSPORT MAT 952 on top in two layers, applied by mohair paint roller with short hair.  Two layers needed, "dragged" on the floor smoothly

Make sure that you sand the ELASTOTURF 851S surface thoroughly before the application of the POLYSPORT MAT 952 varnish.
